The period between the years was considered a special time in old folk beliefs. The days from Christmas to Epiphany were considered as "fallen out of time", as a time when the veils between the here and the beyond open, our ancestors seek contact with us, spirits swirl around and Wotan with his entourage wreaks havoc. However, it was also a time that was particularly suited for mystical experiences. In old times, these days were consciously celebrated - one engaged in introspection, divined for the next year, commemorated the ancestors, and drove out spirits. In more recent times, many people want to experience this time more consciously again.
