"Buddha" is not a surname as one might think, but an honorary title awarded only to individuals who have achieved liberation through their own insight. The man commonly referred to with this title is a historical figure. He most likely lived between the 6th and 5th century BC in Northern India and was named Siddhartha Gautama before his enlightenment. The teachings (Dharma) revealed by him, which have undergone various developments over the centuries, and the monastic order he founded, remain alive today, in recent years through the active work of Tibetan lamas also here in the West.

He has the hand position of an Akshobya Buddha but additionally holds a healing or herb pot in his left hand. In Buddhism, he stands for curing all diseases - including that of ignorance. Mental poisons cause in human beings an unsettled mind - this in turn leads to physical and mental suffering.
