Types of Buddhas
"Buddha" is not a surname, as one might think, but a title of honor that is bestowed only upon individuals who have achieved salvation through their own understanding. The man commonly referred to by this title is a historical figure. He likely lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in northern India and was named Siddhartha Gautama before his enlightenment. The teaching (Dharma) he revealed, which has undergone various developments over the centuries, and the monastic order he founded are still alive today, recently invigorated by the active efforts of Tibetan lamas in the West.
Medicine Buddha
In Buddhism, he stands for curing all diseases - including that of ignorance. Mental toxins cause an unpeaceful mind in human beings - which in turn leads to physical and emotional suffering.
