Ganesha is perhaps the most popular of all the Indian deities. He is considered the son of Parvati and Shiva. According to legend, Shiva went into meditation and Parvati, feeling lonely, created a son. When Shiva returned, he decapitated the boy in anger. Once he realized what he had done, he ordered the head of the first creature that came by to be placed on Ganesha's body to revive him. This was an elephant – a new god was born, uniting the strength of Shiva and Parvati.
It is said that he removes all obstacles. Thus, he is often invoked before any kind of undertakings. He provides material and spiritual prosperity and is therefore considered a patron of business people. But also at every new beginning, whether it be a move or a new job, Ganesha should not be missing, as he blesses the new situation and promises luck.
Ganesha has four arms. They represent the four aspects of the subtle body: mind, ego, spirit, and consciousness.
