Buddha
"Buddha" is not a last name, as one might think, but an honorary title awarded only to individuals who have realized salvation through their own insight. The man commonly referred to by this title is a historical figure. He likely lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in Northern India and was named Siddhartha Gautama before his enlightenment. The doctrine (Dharma) he revealed, which has undergone various developments over the centuries, and the monastic order he founded, remain alive to this day, recently invigorated by the active work of Tibetan lamas in the West.
Medicine Buddha
He has the hand gesture of an Akshobhya Buddha but additionally holds a healing or herbal pot in his left hand. In Buddhism, he represents the healing of all diseases - including those of ignorance. Mental poisons cause an unsettled mind in human beings - this, in turn, leads to physical and mental suffering.
